When it comes to working at height and we need to attach different items to pieces of the structure or things like that, we actually can use things such as slings or it might even be where we're actually using what they call a wire strap. For today's exercise though, we're just going to introduce the sling. This here is what they call a 150 mm sling.

First of all, before I can do anything, again, I need to go to the information that is on this sling. So, as I can see, the serial number and everything else that I need to read before I actually do an inspection of it. To find the serial number on this particular sling, it is actually hidden on a label giving me all the relative information, from a serial number to how old it is, when it was first manufactured, and also what the EN number is. So, I am making sure again, like any other piece of equipment, I am reading that label first. After I have looked at that label and I am satisfied, and everything is in place on that label, I am then going to have to look at my sling. I am looking to see what sort of condition it is in. Making sure there is nothing on there that can hide damage. So, if this was covered in paint, then I would have to consider whether I will be able to use it or not because paint can hide damage. I am looking for any cuts, burrs, tears, feeling physically along it to make sure I am happy with it. Going around, checking it both sides, all the way around. I do not get to wear the sling that has actually been sewn together. And again, I need to check all the stitching on that sling, make sure I am happy with it, making sure everything is in place.

Soon as I have checked everything on there and I am happy with it, I know I can use that to attach things when I am working at height. One thing I will bring to mind here though, the same with any other piece of kit or equipment that we get, always read the manufacturer's instructions that come with that piece of kit or that piece of equipment, because it does have important information on there. And it will tell you about what the safe working load of the equipment is. It will tell you how to look after it. It will tell you exactly what I am telling you now, how to inspect that piece of kit before you use it. It is very important that we do read that information.
